All Patient Refined-DRGs - For Medicaid inpatient fee-for-service reimbursement, NYS Department of Health transitioned to the 3M All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRGs) December 1, 2009. In many ways, APR-DRGs represent a major departure from the various DRG classification systems that have been used since the early 1980s. APR-DRGs classify patients according to their reason for admission, severity of illness and risk of mortality. APR-DRGs use a 16 step methodology to assign a DRG. We provide an overview of the impact APR -DRGs have on clinical documentation, coding and billing.
